GoalLamp explains hockey in plain words. We write for new fans in the United States and Canada who want quick, clear answers about the game. Every guide puts the answer first, then the details.
What we cover
Our guides sit in a few hubs.
- How the game works: periods, game length, overtime and roster size
- Rules and penalties: icing, offside, power plays and fighting
- NHL facts and records: teams, the Stanley Cup and league history
- Gear, sizing and care: pucks, sticks, skates and sizing
- Puck line and odds: what the numbers on a broadcast or app say about a game
How we write
Each guide starts with the answer to the question in its title. Short sentences and everyday words come next. We add tables, step lists and worked examples when they make a rule easier to follow.
We check rules against the current NHL Official Rules. We check facts against NHL.com, the Hockey Hall of Fame, the IIHF, USA Hockey and Hockey Canada. Our editorial policy sets out the full process.
Who writes the guides
Every guide carries the GoalLamp Desk byline. The desk writes, checks and updates each guide on the site. We review guides at the start of each NHL season and whenever the league changes a rule.
Not affiliated with the NHL
GoalLamp is an independent site. The NHL, the NHLPA and the teams do not run or endorse it. Team names and league marks belong to their owners. We use them only to describe the game.
